The globe has experienced tremendous technological advancement in recent decades. The main driving force behind these revolutionary advances is AI (artificial intelligence).
Surprisingly, AI is now so pervasive that we barely give it a second thought. AI enables this, from Netflix’s customized suggestions to weather updates on Siri.
Artificial narrow intelligence, or ANI, is responsible for most of the widespread usage of AI.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the stream of science that deals with building smart machines that can perform tasks that usually need human intelligence. It is now a crucial aspect of our daily lives. Nowadays, most tech companies leverage AI to some extent, and many are also making investments in it.
What is Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)?
Weak AI and narrow AI are other names for ANI. This technology can perform a specific task based on data collection. A few applications of ANI include facial recognition, chess play, self-driving automobiles, etc.
Artificial intelligence with a narrow focus is considered weak because of its functional limitations. Genuine intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness are absent within narrow AI. It is not comparable to human intelligence. But its worth resides in its task.
How does ANI Work?
Artificial narrow intelligence systems are developed with knowledge of the problem they are designed to solve. They are typically trained on a specific dataset. The knowledge can then be used by ANI for decision-making, result prediction, and action execution.
For example, if you want to train a narrow AI system to identify cars in images, you need to train it with a dataset that contains the images of cars. After the training, ANI will be able to identify cars when it sees one in other images.
Types of ANI
There are diverse kinds of ANI. There are two main categories of limited artificial intelligence:
Reactive AI: This fundamental ANI lacks any form of memory or data storage. It behaves similarly to how a human mind might and can react to new interpretations.
Limited Memory AI: The more sophisticated form of ANI is limited memory AI. This enables it to store data and enable precise interpretation using statistical data.
Today, almost every industry has embraced narrow AI as it achieves superhuman accuracy and performance when accomplishing specific tasks. Factors such as robust IoT connectivity, the proliferation of connected devices, and faster computing realms have propelled the progression of AI systems. Despite certain challenges, it has many advantages, including automation, facial recognition, and decision-making.
Additionally, it serves as a building block for upcoming AI systems like general artificial intelligence.
